Using EIDR Country/Region Codes

Introduction

In addition to explicit Country Codes, EIDR Made-for-Region Codes[1] also include codes that identify multinational regions such as International and North America. International and Domestic are defined by EIDR. The 3-digit numeric region codes are defined by the United Nations as part of their UN M.49 standard. Up to 8 Made-for-Region codes can be assigned to each records and may include a mix of country and region codes.[2] Such lists are always additive, and represent the unique cumulation of explicitly identified countries and all countries included in the identified regions.

Obsolete Countries

EIDR includes special 4-character country codes to identify countries that no longer exist for use when creating historically-accurate records.

Obsolete Country CodeObsolete Country Name
CSHHCzechoslovakia
CSXXSerbia and Montenegro
DDDEGerman Democratic Republic (East Germany)
SUHHSoviet Union (USSR)
VDVNDemocratic Republic of Viet Nam
YDYEDemocratic Yemen (South Yemen)
YUCSYugoslavia

Unknown Country

When the country or region is not known, code it as “XX”. This is a valid ISO 3166-1 country code from the “user –assigned” code space.

[1] Found in Edit and Manifestation records.

[2] If a country is included in an identified region, then it should not be called out explicitly. For example, you could list FR and 039 (Southern Europe), but you should not list FR and 154 (Northern Europe) since France is included in Norther Europe.
